Chapter 14
Ashira was genuinely impressed at the resourcefulness of the little hidden community. A perimeter wall of sorts had been fashioned out of pieces of scrap metal and scavenged construction fencing to supply a means of protection. The individual hovels were crude but very functional given the lack of raw materials. There were many distinct species present, which was not surprising. This was still Korosento after all, the capitol of the entire planet. She had been to many levels of its underworld either on assignment or, well, on the run, and had seen what poverty, disparity, and dereliction looked like in many forms, but this was different. There was no squalor despite the rough external appearance. There were no outward shows of drunkenness or addiction, brawling or other debauchery that tended to emanate the lower one descended into the bowels of the city. This was simply a group of people who were desperately trying to make the best of a tough situation.
âNot what you expected is it?â Taria asked as they walked in between the individual sites.
âItâs pretty amazing actually,â Ashira said. âHow long has this place been here?â
âIt was here before we came, and that was about two standard years ago,â Taria said. âItâs grown quite a bit in that time. When we got here, there were about twenty people. Now, we have over fifty.â
âBut why so many do you think?â Ashira questioned genuinely.
âIn case you havenât heard or been living outside of the world, thereâs a war going on. The cost of living has increased, taxes are rising, thereâs a massive influx of people moving to escape the conflict. Korosento just canât handle it all,â Taria said. âWhat about you? Whatâs your story?â Ashira touched her chin, pondering how much information she should allow herself to divulge as they continued to wind their way through the camp. She decided to keep her immediate past quiet for the time being while she continued to think of a way to explain her situation. She knew that the questions were coming sooner rather than later. What surprised her more was how educated and experienced this lady sounded.
âIâm afraid thereâs not much to tell. I left home. Things just didnât work out for me there. So, I leftâ she said sheepishly. She quickly decided to redirect the conversation. âI understand the need to survive, but arenât there shelters or communal housing available for those in this type of situation? I thought about trying to find one myself,â she said.
Tariaâs mouth curled as she huffed. âHmmpf. Have you ever been in one of those places before? Based on your question Iâm going to say you havenât.â Taria was candid about most things. Direct and forthright. âYouâre welcomed to go and try it out,â she said sarcastically âbut Iâm sure weâll see you back here after a day or two.â
âYouâre right. I havenât tried one of those places.â
âWell. Between the stale air, communicable diseases, moaning and wailing, and the bed vermin, Iâd say itâs a regular luxury experience.
